Type Accents

The Basics

Type Accents Tutorial
Type Accents Tutorial
The easiest way to learn how to use 'Type Accents' is to follow the built in tutorial.  To do this click on "Start Type Accents" from the "Type Accents" folder on the Windows Start Menu, and then click the the button labelled "Learn how to use 'Type Accents'". The tutorial will guide you through typing your first few accented letters.

If you don't want to use the tutorial (or if you haven't downloaded the trial yet), you can follow the instructions below:

Firstly, press and hold the 'Type Accents' trigger key(s). The trigger key is the right hand Alt key (sometimes labelled Alt Gr) which is located just to the right of the spacebar. If you prefer, you can change the trigger key on the options screen.

Then, (still holding the trigger key) press a normal letter, number or symbol on your keyboard. You should press the key that looks most like the character that you want to type. So for example, if you want to type an é, ê or ë, you should press the letter e, for an æ you could press either a or e.

A list will then appear with all of the characters that look like the key you pressed.  You will only see the characters relevant to the language or languages that you have selected.

To change between lower and uppercase letters press the "Shift" or "Caps Lock" key or click the "abc" or "ABC" buttons.

You then select the character that you want from the list by either

  • Double clicking the character
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard - pressing enter when the character you want is selected
  • Repeatedly pressing the letter key that you used to display the screen (e.g. press e if you pressed Trigger Key + e to bring up the list)
  • Pressing the number shown to the left of the character that you want.
  • For more ways of selecting the character see the tips & tricks section.
